2016-006: Performance, Environmental and Economic Benefits of BioChar Supplementation in Beef Cattle Grazing Systems.

Researcher: Bart Lardner

Funding: $72,000

Biochar is a form of activated charcoal has potential to reduce methane emissions in ruminants. It has also been shown to improve manure composition. While it has shown early promise, the mechanisms involved are not well understood. This project will determine if, and at what level, biochar reduces greatest amount of emissions in grazing cattle, while also measuring the performance, dry matter intake, an economic effect of grazing cows while consuming this additive.
